Treat her like a real candidate

Having seen Palin's absolutely painful interview with Charlie Gibson I think the real reason she's being cloistered is that they are afraid of what she will say and do. Watching her attempt to provide even moderately coherent answers to the questions being put to her (not to mention, pronounce nuclear Bush-style as "new-cue-ler") I was actually stunned at how completely clueless the woman is. She has no idea what she's doing unless she's reading from a teleprompter no matter how well she is coached. When your VP choice is a female Dubya with no real grasp of issues, you keep her as a symbol to rally your base, you don't expose her to the world.

"A female Dubya"

You know, that's kind of how I've been seeing her lately. Actually, a combination of GWB and Cheney, since she seems to spend most of her time at an undisclosed location.

Look, I've said from the beginning that there are things to like about Palin. She's an appealing personality. I think she's a talented, very conservative, very religious politician. I also think her obvious lack of experience with things outside of Alaska is a huge shortcoming.

For Alaska, I think she's done a reasonably good job--troopergate notwithstanding--and given that she's a very hardline conservative.

But as a VP pick? She troubles me a lot. A governor from a state that doesn't value government? Check. Little or no experience with foreign policy? Check. Relying on emotion rather than reason or information when making decisions? Check, from the little we know. Avoiding accountability? Check.

This is GWB all over again. To borrow a phrase, that's not change we can believe in.
